Millstone Mountain

Difficulty Rating - Easy/Moderate/Severe

Moderate.  Good-sized hills in the middle.  Asphalt/gravel surface.

Directions to start

From Knoxville or Nashville, TN
Take I-40 to exit 338, Westel Rd/Rockwood
Turn NORTH & go passed the BP Station
Check Odometer
Take the First LEFT/West onto Mt Vernal Rd – NOT marked
Apx 1 mile from the BP is a large gravel road that turns RIGHT/North off of Mt Vernal Rd.  This is the staging area.  We will be running on Mt. Vernal Rd.  Do NOT block the driveway.

Route

10 miles - Mostly paved & gravel runs uphill the middle 5 miles.
16 miles - At the cemetery turn-around you would just keep going for 3 miles on very rough unfinished roads.  Out and back would add 6 miles to total above.
START
Mt Vernal Rd WEST apx 1.5 miles of relatively flat paved surfaces that wind around Bow Waters clear cut forests.  Vernal dead ends into Millstone Mtn Rd.
Mile 1.5-5
Turn RIGHT/North onto Millstone Mtn Rd.  This is paved and hilly, gradual climbs up and down, 1 small hill, than 2 medium hills, than 1 great big, huge hill at the end. There are apx 5 clusters of houses – two sets of loose dogs that we could find.  Intimidated by shouting and cowbells and waving arms.
Mile 5
Beware-Game-Warden-Is-Watching Sign, the BIG hill, power lines, and a cemetery at the top of the hill. LUNCH
Mile 6-10
Reverse Route

Alternative Route - Quarry Overlook

For the brave of heart, don't turn back at the cemetery but continue down Millstone Mountain Rd to add 6 miles to total trip.
Mile 6-8
Sometimes SNOW-COVERED roads, frozen mud holes & the GORGEOUS overlook at the Quarry.  Public road that is NOT well maintained for cars – perfectly fine for dogs, motorcycles, & four-wheelers.
Mile 9-16
Reverse route.
