Feeding Trials
|
Dog Foods Tried So far we have tried the following foods. Working Foods, 30/20 - Primarily on Wayeh dogs and rescues who were in harness training for carting or weightpulling.
Active Housepet Foods - Most rescues and boarders
Maintenance Housepet Foods (10-13% fat -- anything under 10% fat is inadequate for the average sled dog, no matter what age) [And for the most part, I find Maintenance foods unnecessary. A fat dog can reduce his weight the same way he put it on, slowly, on a quality food, but LESS of it, with added exercise. A fat dog that comes into rescue, is put on an Active Housepet food because it will be more dense nutrition and easier on his digestive system than the volume most maintenance foods require. He just gets 1-1/2 cup less than his kennelmates. He looses weight the same way he put it on, gradually.] Lamb & Rice - L&R foods are usually much lower in protein/fat than sled dogs generally need, HOWEVER they produce wonderful coats and they have become something of a fad in the last few years. So we grouped them here. We tested all dogs on these at one time or another.
Because L&R PUPPY foods are often HIGHER in protein/fat (something our sled dogs need) we added these.
Special Diets - Nu-Nu's unique needs
Note: Just as an FYI. Eukanuba is the premium version of IAMS. Premium Edge is the premium version of Diamond. Natural Choice is the premium version of Nutro Max. Pro Plan is the premium version of Purina Dog Chow. Sam's Club Exceed Chicken & Rice 30/20 is the SAME food as Maxximum Nutrition Chicken & Rice Performance 30/20 (almost). Kasco & Natural Blend Holistic are both made by Royal Canin.
