Litter Notes

Wednesday 12/15/2010. 3 weeks old - pics are fun, they are walking, standing and wobbling, but we'll call it walking.  It's really helped that I got the bolstered Sherpa beds for their crates.  They have traction and the bolster means mom has a pillow and pups don't get squished between mom and the crate sides.  Pups are lapping in the water buckets, but mostly it's play.  And they sniff her food, but prefer milk.  I let moms wean pups on their schedule.  Imposing a schedule never made much sense to me.  Pups are now singing.  Comet is still "helping" sister ChaCha with ChaCha's maternal duties.  They ask to go out for a couple of hours in the morning, ChaCha & Comet play tug, play dig up the yard, play find things to destroy.  That gives me plenty of time for cuddling, cleaning out crates, refreshing buckets of food and water, and socialization of puppies.  This happens around daybreak.  "Moms" come back in and are content until dusk.  When we repeat the whole thing again.  Next week I'll do coat genetics, color and length.

Wednesday 12/1/2010, 1 week old - took pics, Comet & Bright, ChaCha's sisters, and ChaCha's mama Sunny want very much to "help" her, and she dances around in invitation, "C'mon, let's go see 'em....!" Course that's not gonna happen anytime soon... even if ChaCha would be fine with it.  The other ladies are going to want to "adopt" them.... too soon for that.  ChaCha is an easy-going girl, never in trouble, and has a soothing, calming way about her with other dogs.  She'd let them have her puppies.  OK, sure, we'll share... <G>

Sunday 11/28/2010 - Took 4day pics.  ChaCha's milk has come in finally.  I've been supplementing the puppies and with the litter at my feet as I sleep on the futon, when they are hungry, I hear it!  When she lies on one, I hear it!  Haven't had more than 90 minutes of consecutive sleep in a while... but wasn't so bleary that I didn't realize that ChaCha's boys will HOLLER while nursing, speaking with their mouths full, it's like they are frustrated and want to let everyone know... meaning ME...

Tuesday 11/23/2010 - 6:00p Clingy all night, wants to be IN my lap, on the couch, nesting in pillows.  Wants to go out every 30 minutes to pee... well, not really to pee, more like to look around and sniff and DIG... no digging!  Go back to the living room. to her crate between the couch and the desk, next to her sister Comet.  Yes, they are fast friends... we will see how long this lasts...

9:39p A big YELP, a spin in her crate, and here comes the first one!  A masked gray sable boy.  Which she did NOT clean, did NOT take the placenta off, just cleaned herself up and sat in the corner and stared at it.... OK... Meanwhile sister Comet is in her crate making a RACKET, hollering and pawing and she wants that puppy!  So... I opened her crate door and she and ChaCha went nose to nose, licked each other and I opened the door and ChaCha ran out, Comet ran in, and Comet cleaned him up, got him dry and he started nursing and then ChaCha wanted him back... of course she does, he's clean now.  It's going to be a long night.

11:18p - She knew just what to do to take care of this one.  Another gray sable with masked boy -- like daddy Maestro.

12:47a A third one... she's taking her time, contemplating between puppies...  Gray sable masked girl

1:30a a fourth, gray sable masked boy  Comet really wants these puppies for herself.  But ChaCha has the hang of things and is taking care of them just fine.

2:02a a fifth, and yes, a gray sable masked boy.  Wonder who could be responsible for that, Maestro?  Maybe it's gray sable masked Maestro, or the gray sable masked daddy of Maestro named Charles?  Or just Maestro, maybe?

Finally asleep sometime after 3a.  ChaCha ended up with 1 girl and 4 boys.

11/19/2010 - a week to go and she's already lost the belly hair because she has milk coming in.  She isn't nearly as large as her dam Sunny was with 7, so fingers crossed for a nice easy litter of 5 or so.... Had a bath and then took Malamute-in-Waiting pics with the whole gang -- ChaCha, her dam Sunny, her sister Bright and her sister/neice Comet.  ChaCha spends the days with her family and comes into the Maternity Ward at night.  She spent three hours Saturday night the 20th digging a hole through the bottom of the metal crate pan, and rearranging blankets to her satisfaction.  Eating like a horse...

9/24/2010 - Maestro has a nose like his daddy Charles.  He ignores, ignore, ignores then -- Hey, Mama, whatcha doin'?  Such a gentleman with the ladies.  Such an affectionate goofball most of the rest of the time.  ChaCha lives fulltime with her dam Sunny, her sister Bright, and her neice/sister Comet.  There's more than a little of the goofball in her, as well.  Neither one are the instigators, both have a hefty dose of the calming vibe when things get testy.  Both will walk away from a challenge.  Both are absolute NUTS in harness and are eager to learn anything new.  So long as there is a hug, a cuddle, or a treat as reward.  Pups due Thanksgiving -- 11/26/2010
