Montana was a very hard dog to show because he was always PULLING! From the time he was 5 months old, Russell hooked him in harness and had him pulling tires. He forgot to leash train him, so when I took him into the ring, he about pulled my arm out of the socket! Finally I finished him in October 2002. Montana took over lead position for our carting/sledding team at 1 year of age. We ran a team of 2 Alaskan Huskies and Montana. We would occasionally add Dawn. Russell would run him alone on his sled. Montana has 2 legs towards his WTD title. Montana is retired and living with his sister in a posh neighborhood in Knoxville!
UPDATE: Montana has what I believe is commonly called Coat Funk. When he was a puppy, he did not blow his puppy coat until he was around 8 months, not the usual 4-5 months of age and it was a soft fuzzy brown puppy coat. When he was 1 year old his coat seemed ok and we went sledding Up North with him, then 4 months later it started getting reddish tints and I noticed the guard hairs on this rear legs was breaking off. When he was about 18 month's old, his coat looked sunburned or a reddish color. I put him up for 2 years and watched his coat get progressively worse no matter what foods I fed, supplements, or shampoos I used. I placed him in a home that could spend more time on his care and would allow me access to him for any studies that might occur for Coat Funk. When I finished Montana, I knew he had coat funk. His guard hairs were breaking off, his coat was brittle. He was being fed Missing Link and still no improvement.
Today he has black bare skin patches up and down his back and neck. He is in good health otherwise. His head and legs have normal coat.
