About Asgard

A Puppy From Asgard

Asgard Alaskan Malamutes was established in 1986 with the hopes of producing quality show dogs with working titles (backpacking in particular). We are located in East Tennessee near Knoxville.

I've been a member of the Alaskan Malamute Club of America, Inc. (AMCA), Tennessee Valley Kennel Club (TVKA), and Oak Ridge Kennel Club (ORKC) since 1988.   I've also been President of the Loudon County Humane Society, and support Alaskan Malamute Rescue.

Asgard Alaskan Malamutes is DruAnne B. Martin & my son, Russell who joined in 1990 when he was whelped!

In 1992, after completing championships on a few dogs for friends, I added professional handling to my resume and am available on a limited basis.  Please contact me for details.  Russell has also proven himself in the ring in Juniors and now prefers showing in regular classes.  We mostly show in the Southern Area.

We have participated in weight pulling, sledding, backpacking and conformation shows with our dogs.  Some of our Asgard dog owners compete in Agility and Obedience and I encourage participation in working events.

In 1997, I met with the producers of Animal Planet's BREED ALL ABOUT IT and helped them with the Alaskan Malamute episode.   Two of my dogs and myself were featured on this backpacking in the mountains.  They were A/C CH Asgard's I Told You So, WTD, WPD "Willie" & CH Wild Wind Blowin Over Asgard, ROM "Windy."

I traveled with Russell to Australia (2000) and judged an open show in Perth.  I enjoyed the hospitality of many a fine Aussie!!!  We put on conformation training classes to share our knowledge.  Three of my bitches currently reside in Australia.

We have produced or finished over 30 AKC champions, 3 Australian Championships, & 1 Canadian championship.  We have produced multiple Best in Specialty Show, Best in Sweepstakes, Group Winning, and Nationally ranked dogs and bitches.

Occasionally we have puppies available.  We always have a rescue available for adoption or know of one.  We sell on strict (spay/neuter) contracts for companions and are selective on show prospects.

If you are interested in one of our dogs, please contact us at asgardmals@aol.com. And please sign my guest book and let Sidney Sachs know what a great job she did on this website!!  She is Sleddog Rescue and donations help the dogs! (hint, hint) You can contact her at sleddog@pobox.com.

A Puppy From

While not everyone wants a show dog, it is my philosophy that all prospective Mal owners should acquire their Mal from responsible and reputable breeders.  They should also educate themselves about the breed BEFORE purchasing.  This avoids future heartache and frustration.  It also supports responsible breeders and not "for-profit and uneducated" breeders.

And in the long run, puts less of a burden on RESCUE, because the poorly informed buyer dumps the dog on Rescue when they can't deal with it.

I require these books for reading:

The New Owner's Guide to the Alaskan Malamute by Mary Jane & Al Holobach (www.dogwise.com)  I found this book is easy to read and very good for raising a puppy.

The Alaskan Malamute Yesterday and Today by Barbara Brooks & Sherry Wallis (www.alpinebooks.com)  This is a good book to help the new person LEARN HOW to find a good breeder, WHAT to ASK a breeder, What they should EXPECT from a breeder, and it also has history of the breed so they can decide the TYPE of Alaskan Malamute they wish to purchase

How to be The Leader of the Pack by Patricia McConnell (www.dogwise.com)   This is a great booklet to help you establish yourself as the leader in your house with this breed.

For training I recommend:  Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete (www.dogwise.com)

I require completion of an obedience course for all my puppy buyers. This establishes your leadership role with your dog and teaches proper behavior. Dogs do not absorb this information, it must be taught!!!

I strive for good temperament and structural soundness. I do the recommended genetic clearances for our breed - OFA (hips), CERF (eyes), ChD (Chondrodysplasia).  Please research these problems to fully understand them by following the links.

I also provide a solid health agreement.  I stand behind my dogs. I am always available to my puppy owners and other mal owners should they have a need for advice or counseling.
